Advertising On ChatGPT In Vietnam: How It Works, Cost, Who Should Run It

Advertising on ChatGPT (ChatGPT Ads) is OpenAI's official ad channel, newly opened for Vietnam on 23-24/09/2026 and still in beta. This guide covers how the ads display, the minimum budget, who pays, which industries are blocked, and whether to run it yourself or hire it out — based strictly on what OpenAI has published, with no added guesswork.

What ChatGPT Ads is and where it shows up

ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's official ad channel, still labeled "beta". The ad does not appear while a user waits for an answer — it shows as a small block right below ChatGPT's answer, after the model has already finished responding.

Unlike Google Ads, which targets by keyword, or Facebook Ads, which targets by demographics, ChatGPT Ads matches ads using "context hints" — the topic or question the user actually typed into the chat box, closer to how people ask in natural language than to typing a short keyword.

Ads only show to logged-in Free or Go users aged 18 and up; anonymous users and higher paid tiers do not see ads yet.

When it opened in Vietnam and where to register an account

OpenAI opened self-serve Ads Manager for Vietnam along with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan over two days, 23-24/09/2026. Eligibility is based on where the legal entity is registered — a business registered in Vietnam can open an account right away, with no need to go through an agent in another country.

An ad account locks in three things permanently at creation: country, currency, and timezone — pick wrong and there is no fixing it; a new account has to be created from scratch.

OpenAI verifies businesses through Persona, which can take up to 7 business days; while verification is pending, a new account can only target ads domestically.

Cost: the minimum budget and who pays

The minimum budget for a VND-currency account is 19,000 VND/day — the lowest of any market OpenAI has opened so far, low enough for a small business to test before scaling up. Billing is postpaid, via an international credit/debit card in the business's own name.

Ad spend always goes straight to OpenAI on the advertiser's own card — no intermediary holds this money. If a business hires someone to manage ads for them, that party should only charge a separate service fee, kept entirely apart from the ad budget.

Vietnam has no officially published performance data yet; international figures show a click-through rate of roughly 0.7-1% and a cost per click of 1-8 USD — reference numbers only, not something to use for promising results to a specific industry or business.

A commonly recommended testing budget is upward of 2,000,000 VND/month; below that, the data is usually too thin to optimize in any meaningful way.

Ad creative has to fit OpenAI's tight format

OpenAI's creative limits are tighter than most other platforms: a headline of up to 50 characters (aim for 16-24 so it doesn't get cut off on small screens), body text of up to 100 characters (aim for 32-48), plus one square image and a dedicated brand icon for each creative.

Because the character limit is so short, a creative needs to carry exactly one message; a creative that tries to cram several benefits into one line often gets cut off mid-sentence on a phone screen.

Which industries are allowed, which are blocked

OpenAI bans ads for some industries everywhere, and restricts several more outside the United States — Vietnam included.

  • Banned everywhere: adult/dating content, alcohol/tobacco, gambling, drugs, weapons, counterfeit goods, political content, scams
  • Restricted outside the US (practically unable to run): finance — loans, buy-now-pay-later, insurance, investing, crypto; health — medicine, supplements, medical devices, cosmetic procedures; legal services; specific real-estate and job listings
  • Usually approved: consumer/household goods, local services (restaurants, hotels, spas without medical claims), travel, education/courses, software, e-commerce

Running it yourself or hiring someone to manage it

OpenAI's Ads Manager is simple enough for a business to log in and build a campaign itself, but since the channel is so new, most of the early time goes into figuring out how to write a creative that fits the format, finding the right context hints for the industry, and reading the insights data.

Hiring a managed-ads provider shortens that learning curve with AI drafting creatives within the character limits and checking the numbers every day — but whether you run it yourself or hire it out, the money always goes straight to OpenAI; never hand over a card or an account password to anyone, including a managed-ads provider.

Risks to know before running it

The channel is still in beta — OpenAI can change its policy, minimum price, or Ads Manager interface at any time, without much advance notice.

Don't trust any promise of a specific ranking, click count, or order volume — there isn't yet enough Vietnam market data to guarantee accuracy for any specific industry.

Under OpenAI's advertising terms, a third party hired to manage ads must have a written contract with the business and must never ask to be given the login password — it may only create its own API key inside the account after being invited in.

Frequently asked questions

How is ChatGPT Ads different from Google or Facebook ads?
The targeting is different: ChatGPT Ads matches ads to the context of the question typed into the chat box (context hints), not to search keywords or demographics the way Google/Facebook do. The ad also only appears below the answer, never while the AI is still responding.
Can an individual without a registered business run it?
Not yet. OpenAI verifies businesses through Persona, requiring a legal entity or registered business in Vietnam and a payment card in that same entity's name.
Do I need to know how to code or use the API to run it?
No. OpenAI has a self-serve, web-based Ads Manager like most other ad platforms; the API is only for parties who want to automate creating and monitoring campaigns at scale, or manage several accounts at once.
Is it safe to let someone else manage the ad budget?
It's safe if that party never asks for the account password, never holds the ad budget itself, and every campaign has a spend cap set directly on OpenAI's side. Ask exactly how they handle pausing or revoking access whenever you want.
Should ChatGPT ads replace SEO?
No, not as a full replacement. SEO earns a free mention from AI over the long run; paid ads buy visibility right now but that visibility disappears the moment spending stops. Many businesses run both side by side.
